gear whine only in 6th gear

Well i was at the track last night with my new gears, motive 4:11's with Zexel posi made three passes and really didnt whoop on it that hard on the launches. as im driving back home on the highway, you can hear a whine in 6th gear at like 65mph+, but if i take my foot off the gas the whine goes away, i tried cruising in 4th and 5th gears but really didnt hear the whine. What could this be? i have about 800 miles on the gears, and i didnt change the oil yet, So i am gonna try and change the oil see what happens, but i dont understand why it only whines in 6th gear.. These gears didnt whine at after they were setup, but now it only does it in 6th

With 4.10/11 gears...it's gonna whine. Nothing to be worried about

Yeah...FWIW though...the additive will stop any chatter...but won't quiet the whining (just so you're not like "why did I waste my money")

Re: gear whine only in 6th gear

these gears didnt whine at all when i first got them put in, now after 3 ltrack passes, didnt even dump the clutch, they whine now. What would cause them to start whining? I stil gotta change the rear end oil, cause its been like 800 miles since the install. Is there a way for the installer to go back in there to stop them from whining?

Typically that is what will happen....they won't whine until you've dumped a couple good launches on them

What does the whining mean? I take it that the whine means nothing?

The tighter the tolerances, the more whining, and the more solid (stronger, if that's possible on the 7.5 10 bolt), and the less noise/whining, the more slop there usually is.

Re: gear whine only in 6th gear

It's actually the opposite of that. The more those tolerences open up, the more noisy the'll get. Your backlash will start to open up once you start pounding on it a bit. Even if your not out of the hole hard, just hard shifting at the track will do it. I would venture to guess you still have a crush sleeve with the new gears? That will start taking some abuse and your set up will drift out a bit, which is why you start hearing noises after the inital setup. I'm sure your backlash is a little wider then it was when it was first set up now. Best way to go is a solid pinion spacer. That way, your setup won't drift out as much, if at all. I put one in my 12 bolt during my first gear swap. Was nice and quiet till the first trip to the track, then whined like crazy at the end of the night. The backlash ended up opening up. You shouldn't need to worry though. You just don't want your backlash to open up too much, cause if it does, then you may be one hard launch or hard shift away from breaking some gears.

Re: gear whine only in 6th gear

I had a problem similar to yours start last week. I'm running Motive 4.11's as well with an Eaton HD Posi. There was a leak around the differential cover where I evidentally didn't seal it properly when I installed the rear a month ago. Most of the gear oil leaked out and the rear started to whine horribly *duh* but it only did so in 5th and 6th gear under load. If I let off the gas or put the tranny in to neutral, the sound goes away.

After I found that the fluid had leaked out, I filled the rear up again with gear oil and tightened down all of the cover bolts. I took the car out for a test drive and it's still doing the exact same thing... feels/sounds fine in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears but 5th and 6th howls almost unbearably. It seems to have something to do with the MPH at which I'm moving but it doesn't make sense as to why it howls at say 50MPH+ and only when it's in 5th or 6th gear with the gas pedal pressed.

Don't mean to hijack your post or anything but perhaps our problem can be somewhat the same Seems odd that after a few runs your 10 bolt started to whine and only in a certain gear.
