Free-wheeling when off gas

If I manually downshift my car into d, 2, or 1, and let off the gas it will "free-wheel" and drop the rpms off to like 1100-1200. As soon as i hit the gas it free wheels until the rpms which it should be at and then "locks"( for the lack of a better term) and starts moving my car again. In OD it will hold the rpms fine. After reading on this site on page 16 of 22, it talks about the sprag unit in the TC. I think this may be my problem. Does anybody know if this sounds right?

actually you have either burned up the coast clutch or broken the six lugs that engage the coast clutch to the forward Sprag Assy.

trans has to come out to fix it.

good luck!

So, is it in the tranny or the converter?

From the description sounds like a transmission that was rebuilt and set up like a drag transmission would. I have a Turbo 400 from Rossler and what happens with a drag tranny free wheeling occures when you take your foot off the gas. Mine would do this from 2nd gear on. I had second gear banded but then again mine also is manually shifted also. Sounds like your bands are shot if this is a stock tranny?

Yep, its the stock tranny. It does feel similar to a high stall when not in OD. I was originally told it was a safety feature so I didn't worry about it, but always wondered what was wrong. It's done it since I got the car last novemeber, 24,000 miles ago. Think I should be looking into a rebuild or wait till it goes since it's lasted this long and hope to get another 24,000 miles out of it.

Really unless you have the cash and can,t stand the problem its best to just wait till it pukes. I drove mine for like 5k with no second gear until I could get around to pulling it for a rebuild.
If you can do without the car or have the cash just beat on it till it blows up.

How long did you drive it before you fixed it?

The longer you let it go the more expensive it will get.

The longer it turns in there eating stuff up the more stuff gets hurt.
