fluid on torque arm ???
fluid on torque arm ???
When i had my headers recoated, i had my car up on stands for like 3 weeks. when i got back under it to put my headers back in, i notices the torque arm was all wet with oil or something.
any idea where it could have come from? tranny/rear end?
i dont see how something could leak on it

the rear input shaft on the trans could possibly be leaking, or the pinion seal on the rear end. they are pretty common to leak, i know i replaced both of them on my T/A and the pinion seal on my old Z-28 as well. wiped down the very wet torque arm and floorpan after replacing the pinion seal(this was the majority of the wetness) and its been dry since then.
my pinion seal is leaking for sure, its wet all around the underside of the car from the driveshaft. i've never replaced one before, I need to take a look at the tranny input shaft also, to make sure it isnt leaking.
thanks

pinion seal is very basic. took me about 20 minutes to do my last one. basically....
remove the driveshaft
use a large socket(sorry,i forgot the size, but i bought one specially for it) and remove the pinion nut
then remove the washer and yolk
take a small screwdriver and hammer and tap around the outside of the seal
it has a metal edge that will begin to bend up and soon enough it will begin to move out, then just pry it out
put the new one in. use a block or something to get it started evenly
then tap it all the way around with a hammer lightly and make sure it is seated all the way ( i beleive i used some RTV to seal it as well)
then put nut and washer back on and impact it on
technically there are crush sleeves you need to replace, however i never did and havent had a problem. just dont overtorque the nut back on and youll be fine. really not a big deal at all.

its the pinion seal for sure. i just checked and the bolts that hold the torque arm on to the rear are soaked. so atleast its not the tranny i have to worry about, ill just swing by a shop tomorrow and get the parts i need to do the pinion seal.i wont mess with the crush sleeve then if i dont have to.
should be an easy fix. thanks

The crush sleeve is important for the life of the pinion bearing, I wouldn't ignore it unless you want to replace the bearing in the future too. Might want to read this thread: http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=468748

Mark the pinion nut before removal and take it back to the mark on installation with some locktite and you should be ok. (assuming it's set up correctly now). If you over torque it you will change the preload and it might whine (probably on decell). Just my experience.
its wet on the rearend side, i cleaned it off and i'm waiting to see if it comes right back again. then i'm going to change the pinion seal and whatever else i can while i have it apart.
thanks
