Extreme Problem: Cross Threaded/Stripped Bolt in Rear
Extreme Problem: Cross Threaded/Stripped Bolt in Rear
Took the TA cover off on the weekend due to a leakage problem I finally wanted to fix.
Replaced the gasket with RTV Red, good. Got all the bolts in, good. Torqued *Snap* there goes one of the washers. Then I read RTV Grey gives better oil resistance, so off comes the cover again.
Well, I neglected to clean the holes, pretty stupid because i'm sure some of the RTV got in there.
Anyways, got the RTV Grey on the cover, let it set for a bit, assembled her back up, got to the last bolt and ****, went in fine till about halfway, then got really tight. Tried backing it out and no luck, tried going in again, no luck. Cross threaded reefed on her as a last resort and *snap* sheared it off.
Cover comes off AGAIN, and now I have a bolt sheared off even with the rear end casing, and probably jammed up with silicone AND/OR cross threaded.
WTF do I do now? put the cover back up and not worry about that bolt? lol.
I was thinking a Drill Out bolt extractor, but that ****er is in there tight. Thanks guys.

Buy a 12 bolt.....
j/k
Try the extractor, but you might have to have to just drill it out. Then you can either thread it for an oversized bolt, or heli-coil it to the stock size.
Is it a top or bottom bolt? Those TA covers are pretty stiff - you might be able to get away w/o it. Not the right way to do it, but it might be OK for the short term.

It is the top left bolt (1 off from centre).

I'd glue the broken head to the cover. That way, it will always look like the bolt is in there. It's the thought that counts, right?
Shouldn't leak missing that bolt if you can't get it drilled out.
