Dropped the tranny......literally

So I got everything ready to go and I was getting the tranny in place with my bare hands (i couldn't use a jack because the car is too low to the ground. It's on jackstands). I was about to connect the splines and my left hand slipped. The next thing I know, BAM! My hand hit the asphalt, and the entire tranny follow suit.

I wish I had a camera right now. My hand is about twice as big as it used to be.

Word of advice: DO NOT TRY TO INSTALL A TRANNY BY YOURSELF UNLESS YOU HAVE A LIFT

lol that must of hurt. I've had a centersection out of an 8inch ford fall and smash my arm against the concrete. I haven't put a tranny in since i'm older back when i was 15-16 i let my dad bench press up all our old cast iron 4spds into place.

Thats what I was trying to do, bench press it. I can bench press damn near 400lbs, but I can't even bench this damn tranny. It's alot different then evenly distributed weight.

I just can't figure out the best way to get that tranny up. Even if I had a tranny jack, I couldn't fit the tranny jack and the tranny under the car.

I finally got the sumbitch input shaft spline up with the TO bearing. The tail end of the tranny is still sitting onthe ground.

I'm not quite sure what to do now. I guess I should just jack the tail end up, but I have to get a jack under it and still keep the input shaft in the throwout bearing.

ahha. I know this is the interent but no need to make up BS statments that u can almost bench 400 lbs and cant lift the tranny up
I am only 190 lbs can can probably bench over 220 or so and have no problems putting that T56 in its place or taking it out

lol, i know i kind of thought the same thing. I only know a couple people who can bench that much and they've been lifting for years and are playing D1 college football. They're animals and could easily bench the tranny up in there. Off topic, Marcin i never thanked you for that pic of your Rear seat. Thanks for taking the time to do it.

Re: Dropped the tranny......literally

I had a Tremec 3550 about a foot off my chest in my garage one night, benching it in to place you might call it. Couldnt get the splines lined up before my arms started giving way, all of a sudden I feel it slide in (or so I thought), I release some presure, and it stays put, I figure I am all good. So about 1 second after that thought goes through my mind, the transmission falls the 1 foot right on my chest, felt like it broke my ribs. To add insult to injury, my girlfriend was the only one around, and the transmission tunnel wouldnt allow me to get out from under the transmission. I had to suck it up and wiggle my way out from under it. I literally had the exact markings of the bottom of the Tremec in my chest for about 5 hours, and they were brusied in the next day.

Re: Dropped the tranny......literally

As a matter of fact, I play semi-pro football down here in Wilmington. I'm going out for the Panthers in '06. My bench is 365lbs, my power clean is 315lbs, my squat is 450lbs, and my dead lift is 550lbs. And I only weigh 190lbs. My season wieght is ~230lbs during which these numbers do go up, but I never max out during season.

Anyway.....I think the problem here is clearance. I was only to jack the car about 1.5 ft. This is not enough room to get the tranny on my chest and slide under the car.

Re: Dropped the tranny......literally

My buddy just used floor jack with a piece of plywood on it. Then we both grabbed onto the side and steadied it.
