Drivetrain Noise After ST Install
Drivetrain Noise After ST Install
I installed a street twin a couple months ago and also had the tranny rebuilt at the same time. The old clutch was a SPEC2 and it never satisfied my "driveable" standards. Now that the street twin is broke in, it is great. Driveable, grabby and not too heavy of a pedal. Just about right for me. Now onto my question.
When lugging it (1600-1800 RPM) it kind of growls. It always had done it (as do all other manuals I have driven) but it is just louder now. I also have some huge (loud and somewhat violent) vibes in 4th gear at 60mph. 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th gears do not exibit this noise or vibe. Sometimes on coast/decel (just cruising with very light throttle input) in 3rd, 4th and 5th I get some gear chatter at various RPMs. I am just looking for feedback from people who went from a springed hub to a solid hub like the ST and noticed anything different in drivetrain noise.
For reference, this is installed in a 96' Impala with 4.10 gears. I do know I have a pinion problem and am looking to fix it soon. With 4th gear being 1:1 and the shaft is locked, the entire drivetrain is effectivly one solid piece of steel from the harmonic balancer to the wheel rims. Would this contribute to my issues??
Thanks,
TOM B

Re: Drivetrain Noise After ST Install
I've got about 5k on my steel wheel'd ST and it's noisy too. Mine 'chatters' a little upwards of 1800 and up to 2100 or so depending on the gear. Also under accel I get it too...always thought maybe because I was sort of lugging the engine. Not sure. Not sure if it's normal or not
