Question which driveshaft fits?

Searched around the board and concluded that an LS1 or 1LE aluminum driveshafts will bolt up to my '95 TransAm M6.

Now, is the 4th gen 1LE aluminum driveshaft the same one as the 3rd gen optioned aluminum driveshafts? Bolt right up with zero modifications?

Also - what are the th350 aluminum driveshafts? Will these also work?

Thanks a lot | college student on a budget therefore making doubly sure I get the right one

I don't know if it's the same one but I can tell you they'll both fit. Same dimensions. No mods needed. Good luck and I know what you mean about being on a budget!

That's a trick question. There's no such thing as a 4th gen 1LE aluminum driveshaft...

To the best of my knowledge Yes it will fit. Im pretty sure that all the drive shafts were pretty much the same lenght. I just sold my buddy an aluminum d/s for his 98Z28. The drive shaft was out of an 88 GTA. It works fine. But his car is an A4 car that originally had 2.73's. But I belive that the M6 and A4 drive shafts are the same. I hope this helps.

Well man I can pretty much confirm it. I just done an A4 to T56 swap and I used the A4 drive shaft in the T56 so they must be the same. And an 88GTA drive shaft in a 98 Z28 proves that there is no difference from a 3rd to 4th gen other than diameter. The 3rd gen shaft is 3 inches in diameter and the 4th gen is 4 inches I belive. I hope this helps too.

Yes. I have a 1LE ds in mine. I think what LPE dave was saying was that the 1LE ds is a 3rd gen ds to begin with. They never made a different one when the 4th gen came out. In otherwords, yes it will work.

good to know thanks | now is the difference in diameter (mentioned above) significant in durability?

Gregg, did you have any problems with balance or highspeed/rpm vibration & shaking in the car with the 1LE? Did you use the original u-joints on the alum. ds?

I'm trying to rid my 80mph+ vibration *doh*

The diameters Sleeper Z listed above for the 4th gen are a litte off. A stock LT1 steel ds is around 2 3/4" in diameter. A stock LS1 is 3", and the aluminum 1LE is 2 3/4 diameter. The 1LE is stronger than the LS1 though, it has thicker walls than the LS1 and uses stronger end caps/u-joints.

I had problems with my original steel ds, I got a lot of vibration with it over 80mph. It was replaced by the dealer for free with an LS1 ds in 98 about a year after I bought it. I used that until about a year ago when I switched to a 1LE ds. Both shafts come new with end caps and u joints installed. I never had any more vibration problems with the LS1 or 1LE.

No, I sold it when I bought the 1LE. You can pick one up used in the FS section though. They usually go for about $150, that's what I got for mine.

Does the damper on the front of the LS1 ds make a BIG difference over the 1LE? Looking to nab a low mi. 1LE ds tomorrow.

thanks,
Brian

The LS1 and 1LE driveshafts I've had did not have a damper on the front of them like the stock steel ds uses. I assume it's because aluminum is better balanced than steel. Both the LS1 and 1LE greatly reduced vibrations over the stock steel one. I just went to the 1LE for something stronger than the LS1
