Drive Shaft Problem

So about a week ago i was driving my 95 Camaro and my shifter started to vibrate then i heard something break and fall off. I climbed underneath and turns out my drive shaft bearing busted. I took it to my mechanic and he told me the bearing wasn't a serviceable part, of course. He couldn't find any local two piece drive shafts and a new two piece drive shaft from the dealership was 2200...so he kept looking around and called someone who said they had switched to a one piece with no problem in his 8 second Camaro. The one problem he said is the c-channel would have to come out in order to switch and that would mean the differential would have no support and if i were to "cough" on the gas pedal the differntial would jump...which makes no sense because why would the 8 second camaro do that? any have any advice or guidance on what i should do?

Re: Drive Shaft Problem

It sounds like he is talking about the torque arm when he says c-channel. You can't drive the car without the torque arm and you don't have to remove it to use a one piece drive shaft. I've never done it but everything I've read says you can use any third or fourth generation f-body one piece shaft without a problem.

Re: Drive Shaft Problem

well we called around and theres no one local who can rebuild my drive shaft. I've had no problem finding one pieces online, but what I'm just trying to figure out is if he does have to take out the c-channel?

Re: Drive Shaft Problem

A one piece shaft should work. Don't know what your calling a c-channel.

Re: Drive Shaft Problem

yea i dont really know what it is either, from what i heard its a reinforcement on the body that prevents twisting? and when you cut it from the side it looks like a c hence the name

Re: Drive Shaft Problem

There is no difference between the chassis in a V6 (2-piece DS) and the V8 (1-piece DS) models. Same car, same parts, just a different driveshaft, alledgedly to reduce the harmonic vibrations inherent to the 90-degree V6. GM even changed all the V6's to a 1-piece shaft in the late 90's. Even the torque arm is the same, the V6 just uses holes to mount the center bearing support.

He shouldn't have to cut anything.

One piece is a direct fit

Gave a buddy my original steel '94 Z28 driveshaft when the 2 piece in his '96 V6 Firebird failed. It was a direct fit and he's been using it for about 5 years w/no probs.
