Do I have a disaster on my hands?

Do I have a disaster on my hands?
Well OK, maybe I'm overstating the problem but . . .
I went to put the t56 in today, and it seems to come up short by about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Slides right in, sounds like the input shaft bottoms out against the crank shaft and then appears to be about 1/2 inch away from the bell housing.
Any theories?
Supposedly the tranny is out of a 96 Trans Am.
It was rebuilt by a young man who is a memeber of this board. Is it possible that he got the wrong input shaft in it.
Sure screwed up my day.

More info. I went and did a bit of measuring. From the bottom of the hole in the crank to the out edge of the throw out bearing I get a measure of 5.5 inches. From the base of the tranny to the tip of the input shaft I get a measure of 6.5 inches. Either I've got a input shaft that is too long, or a bell housing that is too short. I'm inclined to think that the problem is the former, since the fellow who rebuilt it did say that he replaced the input shaft.
So, did the T56 come with different length input shafts?
