differential question

the rear end has been whining while going down the road, so the first thing i did was replace the u joints and when i was taking the drive shaft out i noticed that there was quite a bit of play in the rear end. does this mean that the pinion gear needs to be replaced? i'm not real familiar with differentials so would i be better off replacing the whole thing?
