Diff Spitting Fluid

Took the diff cover off my 94 Z28 to inspect and change fluid. The bottom of the diff was fairly clean, no signs of leaking. The top of the diff however had a pretty thick layer of crud. It looks like the diff was spitting out of the breather at the top. The underside of the car also had some wet spots so it did it recently. Quite a bit of fluid came out when I pulled the cover so it was not empty, but I do not know how close to full it was. I just got the car late last year so this is the first time I have serviced it and I do not know when it was done last. From the rust I would say a few years.

I do Autocross the car so it is prone to "spirited acceleration". Is this kind of spitting normal or a sign of a problem? Think the last person to service it just put in to much fluid?

If it's normal I wonder if I could hook the breather to a hose and at lest stop it from making such a mess.

Thanks!
