diff growling after gears

ok.. i put a used set of 3.42s in my 2.73 02 Z28 and had a nasty gear whine. of course i assumed it was the USED gears. bought a new set of richmond 3.73s and now i have a growling type sound...kinda like a baseball card in the bike spoke sound. i dont think its the diff because it dose it when going straight, but i could be wrong. any ideas? cause im out of em

Did you put them in yourself or did a shop do it? If it's a shop take it back to them before the gears wear in. After that you will need another set of new gears if you want them to be quiet. I tried to get mine quiet and ended up just putting in a bigger stereo

Not many people have the knowledge, skill, and patience to set up a rear-end properly. I know that I don't. Luckily, one guy I know does!

both sets of gears where done at the shop i run by a very knowledgable installer. we do 3 to 4 gear sets a month and this is the 1st one we have had this problem with and of course its my camaro.

today i dropped it off at a dealer (if it needs a new carrier i wanna make my extended warranty pay for it) they just called my and said they think a spider gear jumped (?) hevent heard anything else yet.

Cool if it's under warranty tell them to give you a new differential and new gears and if it still makes noise let them deal with it.

well... the 3.73s have less then 20 miles on them and theres nothing wrong with them, the dealership is going to try and warranty everything but the case and the gears. new shafts seals carrier and bearings (which are new too)

I thought that I heard that the richmond's were kind of noisey, I don't know it that's what it is, but it could be I would guess?

Exclamation 3.42 Motive gearset installed into 2.73 carrier

I have the gear set whining problem as well on a gear set with less than 500 miles on them since install. The Motive gear set I had installed by my trusted mechanic whines at 55-65mph. Ther is no whine upon deceleration and whine disappears above 65-70 mph and stays away at high speeds. The factory original gears were 2.73 ration in a 2001 Z-28. I installed a larger stereo system. The car is only driven for pleasure in good weather. I am concerned about wearing out the gear set.
