Diagnose transmission condition?

I found a really good deal on a rebuilt transmission. Almost too good to be true. The transmission isn't in a car, is there anyway to inspect it without actually taking it apart? All I know of is fluid color. Thanks!

put it in a car and try driving it. Otherwise, ask why it was pulled, how it shifted previously, etc. Smart questions will go a long way as to the condition of certain parts.

well check the fluid, then if it looks good I would drop the pan and put a new filter in for cautions sake, and then put it in the car. Do you know how many miles were on it?? That'll tell alot as well. And if you can take the converter I would, just for cautions sake.

60k on the tranny, 5k on the rebuild. Why would taking the convertor be cautious? I have a 3000 stall already, would I be better off taking the 2800 stall that comes with it?

Well first is you're trans going already?? I say to be cautious be cause if you're trans goes then you need a new converter. If yours is fine then keep his just as a back up. Besides if you can swap trannies on your own it makes for a tuning tool. Sometimes you don't need all that stall.

Just a thought

My transmission isn't GONE, but it slips going into 3rd at WOT sometimes. I drive my car almost everyday, so the tranny still runs fine. I just need something for next season. I do all the work on my car myself. IMO the stall on my car is perfect. I wouldn't want any smaller. I know when trannies completely crap out they take the stall with them, but shouldn't mine be fine?
