Detroit locker in a 9"

I just got a killer deal on a complete Moser 9" rear, just picked it up this weekend. It's has a Detroit locker in it though, I know its plenty strong but I'm just wondering how streetable they are? My car is a street/strip car and I wanted to see who's running a locker on the street and how bad are they really? If it's too rough or noisy I might swap it out for a posi. I havn't installed the rear yet to know how it feels, should be putting it in soon. Thanks.

I tried that route once, didn't like it much. The locker constantly popped in and out during low speed cornering, and wasn't great on the road either. I would say, for a street car, swap in a posi and sell that locker. JMHO

That's kinda what I thought. I may just install it with it in and see how it feels. It sounds like it's pretty simple to swap it out. Thanks.

one other thing, there is a "street" locker available that is supposedly a lot less annoying, but I dunno. I just hope you dont have 35 spline axles like I did...nothing but locker and spool available

Yeah, actually it does have 35 spline axles. I noticed there is not that much selection for them. I found this Powertrax no slip diff in Summit:

It sounds like a good choice to me, what do you think of them?

that is pretty much what I was referring to as a street locker. I havent used one, but in theory, it sounds like it would work out alright. Never know till you try though

Like you said it sounds like it would work well but I'd like to hear from someone whos used it before I buy one. I really don't want to have to sell the locker and the axles, that's getting expensive.

I do not drive my car on the street but what I will tell you is that the locker gets annoying really quick. There has been a couple of times were I felt the car was going to fall apart because of all the clunking.

Thanks for the feedback, that's kinda what I thought. I really don't want that for the street. Any opinion on the powertrax diff I found? How do you think that would be on the street?

To be honest I have never run one so I cannot comment. You may want to look in the Mustang forums and see what people think of them.

Locker

I just installed a Moser 9 inch with a Tractec locker and already hate it. The door is open for me to change it with only 31 spline axles to a real clutch-type posi. The thing clicks, clangs when you put it in reverse, and locks up when you come out of a turn and give it gas. The whole car shakes when it does that.
I had two problems with the install. Problem 1 was I didn't have the correct pinion yoke installed. I guess there are 2 different length ones. I needed the longer one because the ds was sticking in the end of the trans about 3/4 of an inch. You will note that the back tire sits about 1/2 inch more to the rear after the install too. Secondly, the panhard rod where it connects to the driver side mount was a pain in the a$$! They made that bushing mount a bit too tight and I had a heck of a time getting that bushing in there and lined up. I was using jacks at the top and the bottom of that thing trying to press it in any way I could. Now it is binding up and affecting the handling. My rear also didn't come with brackets for my emergency brake cables, and brake lines which I thought was kinda skimpy for a 2k rear. It sure would have been nice if GM had just put an 8.2 10 bolt in there to start with ya know?!!!

Thanks again for all the feedback guys. I just removed my stock 10 bolt this weekend, working on getting the 9 in. One more question, I need to change the oil in it, it's been sitting for over 2 years. What oil should I use, 80/90 or a higher weight like 80/140. Also dino oil or synthetic? I was thinking synthetic since it doesnt have a posi but wanted to check. Thanks again.
