Dead Rear End?

I've read the posts about the humming/vibration coming for the rear ends of our beloved camaro. Mine just started making this noise this summer.. I think this might be a little more severe. The humming is sooo bad that it makes your ears numb after about 30 mins of it! I changed the axle bearings yesterday, but that didnt't fix it. The noise seems to come mostly from the left side and I feel a lot of vibration in the center column, but I can still feel some up by the pedals. I've also heard some "chattering" when I let off of the gas. Is this the rear end $h***ing the bed?
Another thought that I had was: the tires are old, the car sat (used in the summer only) I inspected the tires and they are hard as a rock!! The tread has no flex in it and it doesnt leave rubber when I spin the tires. So my question is... Could the tires be the cause of the vibration and humming because the are tooo stiff? If its the rear end where can I find a 3rd member that I can swap myself.

Thanks for reading,

JB

Re: Dead Rear End?

JB, back when my car was only 2 years old it had the same problem you are having now. It was so loud you would have thought I had a super charger installed. Turns out that the ring and pinion were trashed. GM fixed that and it was fine until I upgraded to a 12 bolt.

Pull the cover off and inspect the gears and check the gear oil for metal particals. Is your pinion seal leaking also? Mine was.

HTH,
Kenny

The seal did leak. How much did GM charge to fix this?

Re: Dead Rear End?

Fortunately it was covered under warranty.

I had the ring/pinion gear break on my S-10 4x4 a couple of months ago and a shop quoted me $750-$1000 to rebuild it . I just bought a very used rear end from a junk yard for $250 and installed it myself.

Re: Dead Rear End?

Did you buy the whole rear end or just the ring and pinion with the bearings on it? I had that thought but didn't know if that was an option.

Thanks,

JB
