Couple of tranny questions
Couple of tranny questions
I was just told by a friend that there are different versions of the 4l60e from different years that will not mate up to my 94 Trans Am. Is this true? He said something about the electronics being different. And now that I have to replace mine I was wanting to make sure that I got the right one to just bolt it up.
Re: Couple of tranny questions
I think that 93's were sort of a transition year between old / new electronics, etc. I know they used different 6-speeds than other years, and I wonder if they had a different 4L60 than '94+. Then the LS1 cars ('98 - '02) have a slightly different bellhousing or something?
Or maybe it's just the converter / flexplate that are different?
SO, what I'm getting at here is that YES there are different versions of the 4L60E, so to get one that will for sure work in your car, I'd say get a '94 - '97 and you should be fine

Re: Couple of tranny questions
The 94 uses a different type of lockup for the converter. I have seen posts where people used other years but I think your best bet is to get one from a 94 or have yours rebuilt.

rngilliland is correct, 93's had no electronic controls, 94 was the first year with electronics but in 95 they found a better way to electrincally lock the converter, so 95-97 are direct replacments for each other as are 98+ withall cars in those years 93 and 94 are standalone years...
There are things to do to convert a 95-97 tranny to work in a 94 but for the cost and agrivation it would be easier to either have yours rebuilt or find another 94 to have built...
