Couple of gear questions

I have my eyes on some gears for my '94 Z......I want 3.73's and I've been shopping around and seen some Richmond gears in the Summit catalog for pretty cheap.....do I get just the ring & pinion or do I have to get the installation kit? I'm planning on having it done at a performance shop; I'm not doing it myself.

So all I need is to bring the ring & pinion to a shop and that'll be fine?

Also, I just want to make sure which 3.73's to get. It's for the 10-bolt, right? I need all the details I can get cuz I wanna get them soon and I know virtually nothing about this stuff.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Couple of gear questions

I see you have 2.73's, which would mean you have a 2 series carrier. You'll have to buy 3.73's for that carrier. With your mileage I would buy the deluxe install kit with new bearings for the axles and carrier. With the mileage in consideration, I would think about a new posi unit also. Starting to get expensive now with the price of installation . If you get a new posi, get a 3 series one and the gears to match.

Couldnt have said it better my self...

Although i'd like to add that Richmond gears tend to be a bit loud as far as gear whine goes..if you use your car daily, i would reccommend going with a Motive gear

So a 3 series posi and the matching 3.73's?

This comes in a deluxe install kit?

Re: Couple of gear questions

i am still going thru this myself. goint to post a break-in question in a minute. the way it was explained to me, you dont need the install kit (bearings etc.) but if you have over 40k miles on the existing parts you should get them replaced at that time. $100 extra in most cases. i paid $190 for richmond 3.73's. 2 series carrier. parts and labor total from local pro-shop was $550

The posi doesn't come in the deluxe kit. A new one is around $450-500.
A cheaper route would be to get your current posi rebuilt by Auburn for about a $100, and buy the 3.73's for a 2 series. I'm assuming you have an Auburn. Good bet that you do. Here's a link.

Here's a link to the install kit. Scroll all the way down.

OK, so a posi is $500 plus whatever the 3.73's would cost? So I'm looking at around $700 not including installation costs?

My 2.73's are lookin real good right about now....
