could changing a u joint the wrong way kill a 10 bolt?

My friend has a 96 Z, 6spd, and had a strange noise coming from her driveline. She took it to a guy who took the driveshaft out and changed the u-joint. Afterwards, she said it felt as if she was being restricted while coasting and then the rear shattered basically right after the install! It seems too coincidental to have the u-joint install not to come into question. I'm just wondering if its a possibility for it to be the culprit.

I cannot imagiine how someone could change a u joint improperly, let alone how an improper change would destroy a rear end. Of course, people are capable of doing unimaginably stupid things. More likely that the rear end was on it's way out to begin with.

It is more likely that the rear was going out and that caused the u-joint to fail.
