converter tuning?

I'm looking to get a SSF 3500 TC. Do I absolutely need to purchase a programmer of some sort, or can some of the transmission shops be able to program the shift points and such? If I do need such a thing, what would be the most inexpensive way to go? Thnx

Re: converter tuning?

As a general rule there is no tuning required with a TC.

Unless you are getting a TC with a high shift extension - which you wouldn't be doing unless you were running a cam and have already tuned out your shift points and were having the TC custom built to match your tuning.

Otherwise the TC has no bearing on the shift points

Re: converter tuning?

You do need to remove torque management from your PCM. You can do this with some of the progammers but not all of them, hypertech DOES NOT REMOVE TORQUE MANAGEMENT. You can go to places that have LS1 Edit that will perform a basic tunes for approximately $150.00

When I first got the Midwest 3000 stall converter I used to have, the Torque Management was still in my PCM. At the track it didn't seem to be a problem. But around town if you all of a sudden deside to kick it down (especially after going around a corner) the computer would change the timing sort-of like when it hits the rev Limmiter but not quite as extreme. It did annoy the heck out of me.

Once torque mangement was turned off you get the full benifits of the high stall converter.

Good Luck,

Al

You don't need to remove TM when you get a TC. All TM does is pull timing during the shift. Removing TM is the equivalent of power shifting ... except now your doing it all the time.

TM acts the same wether you have a stock TC or a high stall TC ... it simply becomes more noticeable with a high stall TC.

Re: converter tuning?

I reduced my TM and it made a difference? and the trans has lasted for 33K to date.

I didn't like that feeling of the power slowly increasing as the rpms got higher

No tuning needed.

If you have a 01 or 02 LS1 then you'll want to delete TM but pre 01 models should be GTG.

Good luck with your new verter!

Wrong.

TM was really messing up my world on my 99. I think it should be deleted on ALL years, or at least turned down to a VERY little percentage.

I've never heard of anyone burning out their tranny because of it being gone.

I'm not wrong. Not completely anyway. TM is a huge issue with 01 & 02 models but very few have reported problems with TM and 3000-3500 stalls on the 98-00 models. I'm sorry to hear you had issues with yours but that's not the norm. 9 of 10 pre 01 cars will be good to go without any tuning especially if they installed a shift kit. But I agree that you may as well delete it on any year LS1 if you have a programmer already. I just wouldn't spend money to do it on a 98-00 model unless it was obvious it was needed. Like you said deleting TM won't blow up the tranny. It might cause the trans to wear out a tad quicker but heck the higher stalls are doing that anyway. I'm gonna run my 4L60E until it dies and then replace it with something stronger like a stage 3, 4l80e or th400.

Fun, fun, fun.
