Converter Selection

I copied this quesiton and answer from www.converter.com's FAQ about their stall converters.

DOES STALL SPEED AFFECT NORMAL STREET DRIVING?
Normal driving is not affected by stall speeds up to approximately 3000 RPM, particularly with a good converter. A car will begin to roll normally when a higher stall speed converter is used. Quick acceleration will be favorably influenced by stall speed. A very high stall speed (above 3000 RPM) would not be satisfactory for street use.

I am looking at modding my A4 where it will end up around 400+ RWHP. From what I have read on many of the posts on this board many of you favor the 3200. Those that have 2800 converters say they should have gone bigger.

My car is not a daily driver. It sits in the garage most of the time and I drive it on the weekends and sometimes to work (35 miles each way). It makes it to the track about once or twice a year. What do you all recommend? I was told to go with a 3200 stall if I get the LE2 heads & cam package. I'm still not sure if I comprehend the difference between a 2800 and a 3200 stall. So what's the difference (other than 400rpms for you wise guys )?

Re: Converter Selection

Follow up question since I'm getting no responses on my first one : What would happen if the motor is pushing 400hp and you don't get a converter?

Re: Converter Selection

Well since you would have bigger cam in it, the stock stall would be way too low and the car would more than likely stall out at stop signs and lights. I personaly like thing a 3600 stall would be perfect. It is somewhat noiceable during normal driving but not that bad. You'll get use it real quick. But when you go WOT you'll really know its there. Plus since you don't drive it very much i think it would be a good choice. I agree with the statement above except for the last sentence. I think anything higher than 4500 would be too high for steet use.

Re: Converter Selection

I got a 3500 stall and I love it at the track, and hate it just about any other time.
The problem is how high you have to rev them to make power.
example: I don't know about you but I love the feeling of cruising down the expressway, and tapping my gas to jump ahead of other traffic. Well since I'm usually cruising at 200 to 2500, this means I have to rev up 1500 rpms before I make enough power to accelerate. by then I'm making so much power that it outright dangerous.
Then again they are lots of fun when you want to go fast.
