Clutch or rear axle fooked?
I was driving on the highway to pick up my sister from work when I noticed that the guy next to me didn't seem all there( and that the whole right side of his car was messed up bad and pretty fresh). Then he began to loose control so I down shift and hit the gas to dodge him and not hit the guy to my right ( he got hit =[ )or slam on the brakes and get hit by the guy behind me. Well anyway after that i was riding in 5th at about 70 and when I tryed to speed up it was like I was barely getting any speed, the engine sounded normal and was at about 4.5k RPMs. So I pulled off and when I was in 1st it was acting the same way. Did I strip the gears on the axle or did I kill something in the trans or something else? Pls help, the car is a 97 z28 M6.
If your RPMs aren't rising significantly faster than your speed, your clutch is slipping. I'd check that first, if it was your rear end, your gears would whine quite loudly or you wouldnt be going anywhere.
I've had both an incredibly shot slipping clutch and needed a gear set replaced as well. Drove 250 miles on that messed up set of gears most of the way down Michigan's lower peninsula trying to get home from my cottage. Not exactly what you want to hear that far away from home. I also watched my friend in his 02 Z28 break an axle. He had the car towed home from the track.
So my guess is your clutch from what you're describing.

Yeah, if you're giving the car gas and the engine is revving up, but the car isn't speeding up like it should, sounds like a clutch
. I had the clutch go out on my '81 Z28 years ago, and I know that even in 4th gear, I could floor the throttle and the engine would rev up, but the car would stay at the same speed!!!
I tried doing a burn-out from a stop and all I got was a headache from the burning clutch smell!!
Anyway though, it sounds like you're in need of a clutch
