Clutch Problems?
I am an old aged female lady so please be patient. I have a 1998 Z28 and about 10 months ago my clutch went out (straight to the floor board). The dealership installed a new Master Cylinder. This past November I was driving and the clutch once again went straight to the floor. The Dealership towed the car in and then said they could not find anything wrong...the clutch and the car driving fine. Sure enough, I picked it up and nothing seemed to be wrong except the clutch felt a little "softer" than usual. Well, last week the clutch did the same thing. I sat in the middle of the street with my flashers on and picked up the clutch with my foot and pumped it. After doing this about 10 times the clutch built up pressure and it disengaged to where I could shift it and make it to work. The Dealership came and drove it to their shop and once again said they could not find anything wrong...they have had it for 4 days. I asked them to change the master cylinder...it is still in warranty, but they won't. If this has happened to anyone you know that this can be a little scary driving in traffic. I asked them to call the factory to see if they could help troubleshoot the problem to no avail. Does anyone out there have any ideas? They say it's not the slave cylinder citing that once that goes out it's out and is not intermitent. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated...I'm getting pretty leary of driving the car again.
Re: Clutch Problems?
I went here http://autopedia.com/html/NHTSA.html and looked for recalls/technical service bulletins (TSB) for your 98 Z28. No recalls, but, TSB 3027, NHTSA item #10008758, seems to apply. Ask your dealer, in writting, if a TSB exists for your problem. That gives them a chance to at least say that they have overlooked it and have now found it and will fix your car. If they do not fix the car, call the 800 # in your owners manual and ask how to file a complaint against the dealer. That usually gets it fixed.
Most dealers do not like to do warranty work because they do not make any money on it. It is no longer about happy returning customers, it is about volume sales.
Hope this helps,
PJ

Re: Clutch Problems?
On a side note, if they do replace the slave be sure they replace it with the updated 2001+ slave cylinder.

Re: Clutch Problems?
Trevor, Thanks for replying. The Dealership said if it was the slave it would not be an intermittent problem, once the slave goes out...it's out. Is that true? Also, they said it would cost around $750 to drop the transmission and check it out and if it wasn't the slave I'd be out that amount. Since I've had the car back it hasn't done it again but I know it will, it's happened twice. Thanks for the feedback.
