Clutch damper springs broke...

McLeod disc with less than 10k on it behind a mild 350. Never neutral dropped, just some hard launches from around 3k rpm. No evidence of heat scoring on the PP or flywheel. This pisses me off. I'm going to call Thunder Racing (vendor) and McLeod on Monday to see if they'll replace it for me. Is this common?

Ha, that looks a little like my spec.

They are going to sell me any clutch they have for 1/2 price. My clutch had 15k miles on it.

Did they tell you what causes the failure? Or is it just a manufacturing defect?

Re: Clutch damper springs broke...

I just pulled my clutch only to find the same damn problem!

Mine too is a Mcleod DF but I have about 45k and 5 years on it so I'd say I'm sol and stuck with buying a new clutch.

Dave

ps. let us know how you make out

Spec told me to check all my mounts. As if worn motor or tranny mounts would cause this problem They also said a worn pilot bearing, or tranny main bearing, duh! I replaced the pilot bearing with the clutch, and if the tranny main bearing was worn enough to cause the clutch to come apart, it would be obvious. The clutch was just a pos.

Re: Clutch damper springs broke...

Spec told me that it was from a drivetrain misalignment and that it was definitely not horsepower that caused it. My pilot bearing was also replaced with the clutch.. My driveshaft, u-joints, and rearend internals are also all new.. I just had the tranny apart last year and everything was fine, backlash on the input and output shafts are normal, etc.. So ya, just a POS clutch.. Waiting on my McLeod street twin to arrive now, hopefully it'll be better than the Spec, although this thread doesn't seem good

Mine always felt right, but wouldnt always totally disenguage. It was hard shifting, and made weird ratteling noises.

My clutch wouldn't disengage. I thought the input shaft to the trans was binding in the pilot bushing.

I got a fax back from McLeod after faxing them. The guy pretty much said the same thing Spec did... bellhousing alignment, worn pilot bushing, or the splines were somehow working the hub back and forth. My bellhousing bolts were tight, I don't know how it could have been out of alignment, and my pilot bushing is only two years old. My 2nd gear syncro is about dead anyway so I think I'm going to rebuild the tranny next week, or at least tear it down to figure out what parts I'll need.

Re: Clutch damper springs broke...

Both times that my Spec's were messed up, I had no symptoms at all, besides some shaking when taking off (Spec kept saying was normal), and the second time I was getting drivetrain shakes at speeds above 70. I decided to put the car up on jack stands, put it in 4th gear, and then let the clutch out and revved it up while a friend looked under the car (from the side) to see what was shaking. He could only see the transmission shaking, but said the driveshaft was spinning smoothly. So I pushed the clutch back in and turned the engine off while the tires were still spinning and it made some terrible noises from the bellhousing area.. That's when I knew I had to pull the tranny and see wtf was going on.. Ended up being the broken clutch springs and a worn out pilot bushing Spec will blame it on the pilot bushing probably, but it was new when I put the clutch in, so my opinion is that it was the shaky clutch that wore out the pilot bushing pre-maturely, but whatever..

McLeod Street Twin and a new pilot bearing seems to have solved all of my problems
