Can you fix rev limiter problem easily?

I believe my car is hitting the rev limiter sometimes. It only happens when the car is WOT. I don't know what is causing it or what to do to fix it. I thought about having it retuned to lower the shift points. Maybe the transmission is slipping and allowing the rpm's to climb faster than the speed. I wonder if there is something I could do or change that will fix this problem. It happens sometimes from a stop when quickly accelerating, right before it shifts into 2nd. I also notice it when on the freeway going 50 or so, it will happen if I accelerate quickly.

Opti? Really? Maybe the full ashtray is caused by a bad opti too....

Sorry to say you really should fix the transmission condition first as changing the rev limited might just cause some engine damage with stock components. If you are idling along at 50, nail the throttle and bang onto the rev limiter you have s pretty bad issue....

Re: Can you fix rev limiter problem easily?

When my opti started going bad the motor/ignition would start breaking up under hard acceleration, otherwise ran normal.....felt like hitting a rev limiter. Would have thought that he would have seen the tach spike if there was powertrain slippage........he didn't say that.
ps Full ashtray caused by bad habit.

I have a few data logs I made. Can you tell from them if it indicates a slipping transmission? If so, what do I look for?

Does engine rpm spike to redline during these episodes?

What is the actual point that you hit the limit? I assume its between 5800 and 6000. I will check the log and see how high the rpm's reach.

I believe you're right unless your tuner has raised the limit..

I just checked the data logs and got several runs 5850 to 6000 rpm's when the car shifted into 2nd and third.

That sounds like a transmission problem but you should probably have others chime in,....I'm limited on auto tranny knowledge.

Re: Can you fix rev limiter problem easily?

I took the car out today. I was on the freeway and went to go around a car and when I floored it the rpm's instantly jump up and bounced off the rev limiter. The car barely made any increase in speed and it took just a second for it to happen. It sure sounds like a slipping transmission. The weird part is the car will chirp the tires when shifting and still can do low 13's in the quarter. Maybe 12's with a fix transmission and all my mods Anyone do an A4 to manual? Any advice and cost ideas?

Previous posts years ago stated that the auto trans can take up to 400hp.You might have worn out the clutches, but, also, there is some kind of modual on the side of the trans that goes south as well.(electric trans).I would do the cheap stuff first, and change the fluid and see if that helps.Hope this helps.

Re: Can you fix rev limiter problem easily?

Are there any codes in the computer referencing the tranny? Some may not set the SES light.

Changing the fluid will not help.

Randomly changing parts is a waste of money.

Take the care in and have it checked out.....

I have a similar issue, since the new engine was put in the car will nearly always hit the limiter, we even tried making it higher and lower. I hope you get it fixed cause it can get annoying.

Re: Can you fix rev limiter problem easily?

How many miles on the trans and whens the last time you changed the fluid? You would be suprised if you have never changed it what comes out of them when you beat on them. My dads 95 had alot issues with slipping we dropped the fluid put in some royal purple and a new filter and it has helped a tone. Its not totally cured but it was a night and day difference and might help you get through untill you have the funds to have it rebuilt.
