bleeding clutch

Help, I know that I will need a new clutch before long but hopefully not now. I let my clutch reservoir get toooo low and now I can't disengage the clutch/pedal goes to the floor. When trying to bleed the system I have loosened the U bolt holding the master cylinder and removed the slave but the slave push rod does not move. I can't push the rod in, like I guess you should be able to, in order to remove the air in the system. The rod will not move when I push it by hand but when I reinstall the slave Cylinder the rod must be out some because the rod comes into contact with the fork and nuts will just start by hand before a wrench is needed. When the nuts are tight there is still no pedal pressure/pedal goes to the floor. Is my problem the slave or the master how can I tell?

Sorry for such a long post but I need HELP.....Thanks Randy

Re: bleeding clutch

You should be able to push the slave cylinder rod in with hand pressure with some effort. Be sure the top is off the fluid resevour to allow the pressure to escape. Just fill it and work the slave cylinder until no air bubbles are seen. If you have taken the thing kinda apart, the slave cylinder needs to be below the resevour.

Re: bleeding clutch

GM sells a whole new updated kit. It includes the Slave, resivroir(sp?) and master. It is all pre bled and everything. You just install it an your done. I got mine for like $110? A deal considering how much of a PITA it is to bleed the system yourself.

Re: bleeding clutch

QuasarblueZ28 is correct, you should be able to push in the slave cylinder actuator rod by hand. You will probably need to ball up a rag in the palm of your hand when you press in on the rod because it doesn't push in real easy. Have the reservoir about half full (so it doesn't accidentally overflow), have someone keep and eye on it for air bubbles as you slowly press in on the rod. But more important, how did it get low on fluid? It's a sealed system, and the only way it can require refilling is if you have a leak. I just bought a new master/slave cylinder from Dal and as I remember, it was $104. I just bought it because I wanted a new slave cylinder to use with my new McLeod Street Twin setup.

By the way, I reassembled the new GM master cylinder that I got from Dal, my used (30K miles) GM braided line (complete with drill mod), and slave cylinder, bench bled and filled with new hydraulic fluid. It's ready to install. If you're interested, I'd take $50 for it, plus shipping.

Re: bleeding clutch

Thanks for the replies; yep I just replaced the whole mess. Like you said it comes in a kit with slave, master, reservoir, and breaded line. Only problem I had to pay full price for it all. I couldn’t wait for the shipping from Dal he was out of town. Thanks again for the replies…

Re: bleeding clutch

the replacement slave cylinders that you get from Advance have a bleeder screw in the top. Crack it loose and gravity bleed it. Tighten the screw, pump it up and crack it loose again and you're done.
