BIG TIME tranny problems...

Well, I just burned through my third tranny. The last one lasted 2600 miles, and this one lasted 1700. I need to figure out what is blowing them. I figured the guy rebuilt it wrong the first time, so I had him rebuild it again (for free), but then it went again 1700 miles later. I checked the tranny fluid regularly, and didn't beat on it. I baby my car, so it didn't blow from abuse...Every time I have it rebuilt, I lose third and fourth, and the clutch packs are completely worn down...Theres a lot I can explain, but it would take me a couple of days to write it all...Lets see, I figured the tranny was going to go this time, becuase it whinned a little when it shifted (when I got on it a little), and it just seemed to feel different when I was going down the road...Whenever I put it to the floor, it hits the rev limiter until you let off, so I figured the previous owner played with the shift points, but when I took it to my local dealer, they said "you can't play with anything in that ecm", but I thought you could...Then I also thought there might be a problem the trannies valve body, or maybe the third and fourth selonoid (I don't know how to spell that) might not be working right...I can't think of anything else that could keep blowing my trannies...I also thought of just buying a different 4l60e, but I don't want to do that if I don't have to, or if it won't fix it...So I might just sell the car...But I REALLY don't want to. If you guys have any tips or advice, let me know.

In the auto repair business, usually the part that is broken is pointing to another part that's causing the problem.

The fact that your clutch packs are messed up already most likely means there may be some bad electronics or other mechanics not working properly and ruining other things.

I'd take that thing to a reputable performance shop and have them build that thing right, and make sure they take a look at everything in there. There's some places online that offer great rebuilds, TCI and Hughes are always the ones I hear about.

Good luck.

I can't afford to have someone rebuild it on the clock ($1500 is too much for me)...I thought it might be electrical, but I don't know too much about the electronics in the trannies and the ecm...Also, I've been using the TCI master overhaul for the past two trannies...Any other ideas?...Also, do you think I should keep this tranny, or buy a different one?

LOL Well if you can't afford to have it done right you may be stuck

There are many things that cause this and this is still the leading failure for this unit

Re: BIG TIME tranny problems...

There are plenty of ways of fixing things without spending excess money. I mean, I don't have a lot of money to spend on my car, even though I wish I did. When I have the tranny rebuilt, I do all the work except the actual rebuilding of the tranny...Also, what is the leading failure for trannies? You said "this" is, but what is "this?"

A 4L60E can not be expected to last with a backyard rebuild. The guys that build turbo 350's and glides don't have a clue. This thing shifts off of the computer and line pressure is set and timed by the computer. If there is the slightest thing wrong with the input the computer see's it can't supply the line pressure to shift it correctly.I just paid $2500.00 for a modified one,so make up your mind it will cost or you can get plenty of R&R experience.I know that isn't a plesant answer but you need to take it to someone who has done more than one of these to get it done correctly.Have you considered a GM reman? They come with a warranty, but they ain't cheep either.Maybe one from the junk yard with low miles?????
