better converter for bolt on `02 WS6
better converter for bolt on `02 WS6
I`m asking this for my buddy. He has an `02 WS6 w/ the following:
-3.73 gears
-SLP air lid, long tubes, dual cats
-Corsa Cat-back
-Nitto 275 NT555R drag radials
-PCMforless tune
Ran a 12.8 @ 108 this past Wed. w/ stock converter.1.91 60` No traction issues (Duh). He could only wind it up to about 2000rpm for the launch. I`m trying to talk him into a better converter to launch harder. I`m not real knowledgable as I row my own gears
He wants the car to still be street friendly (no high stall), but wants to be able to launch a bit harder. Yes, he wants everything
.
Any suggestions?

As mentioned, you'll get all kinds of suggestions. If he has the 3.73s and is willing to buy a quality converter, I'd go with a 3200. If he had taller gears, than yeah, I would say 2800. For reference, I just switched from a 2800 Vig. to a 3600 Yank, and the Yank takes no more gas pedal than the Vig. did to get the car moving. This was a pleasent surprise. I too, have 3.73s.
3200 minimum is my call. Everyone used to do 2800 and I don't know anyone who would go back to 2800 after stepping up to a 3200/3600/4000, etc. There's no point in trying to utilize power under 3000rpm....BECAUSE THERE ISN'T ANY!!! Losing street manners takes something really crazy. My glide/5000 stall combo was streetable...it just made a more noise getting into traffic..
Now that's it's tightened to 3000, it's almost boggy feeling.

I have a question I have a 2800 stall which I originally brought to go along with h/c on stock short block but now I'm doing a stroker to go with h/c and lt's will the converter still stall at 2800 with the added tq of the 383 or will it stall higher because of the additional tq? My car has 3.73's in it and in od at highway speeds my tach is reading 2600 rpm and I don't want to burn up the trans with a 3600 or higher stall how much et am I leaving on the table with the 2800.
You could have a 5000 stall that will still lock-up at 2000 on the highway.
IMO there is no reason to run a stall that low.
