Bearing Races in Rear End

Started on my gear swap yesterday and was having some problems getting out the bearing races. After about an hour I was able to get the one closest to the driveshaft on the pinion out and a new one in, but the one on the pinion near the ring gear is is not coming out with the same techniques as with the other. While there are two lips on the race to pull it out, a 2 jaw puller isn't working. Any other ideas.

I now that using new bearings with old races is a bad idea, even though the races looks perfect, but with the bearing kit i bought, it has shims to go behind the race to change the pinion depth.

Also, on a side note, will changing in pinion depth change the backlash. With the first shim I had them put on the pinion with the bearing, and with the carrier shims I tryed so far, the backlash is at .009", which is perfect according to strange.
