BANG! Rear end lets go!
Hi there,
After some test runs on a wide, lonely road, on the way home it finally happened: Took of from a red light, very gently, and there is goes CLACK!
For f*cks sake, it was on street tires!
I barely made it home, max speed was 30 mph as it was grinding and clacking horribly! I took off the diff cover and found 2 teeth broken off of the pinion gear.
I know I would break it this year with ET Streets, 125-shot and an M6, but not like this, on street tires...
So, untlil I can afford a new Strange 12 bolt, I'll put in my old factory 3.42 gears.
My question is, do you have a good gear install guide? Or some advice for first-timers?
Thank you very much

i would take a careful look at the posi unit as well...i lost a dana 44 on a vette at the track launching and shot a pinion tooth through the bottom of the carrier..(track prep guys were thrilled to have gear oil on the launch pad..
) and i also found that the posi unit was the culprit as it also lost a few teeth... make sure you have precision tools when doing the install or you can wind up with a very noticeable humm going down the road.. once you've built as many as i have they become second nature..you can feel the lash on the gears by hand.. but it takes a while to get there. not sure on the F-bodies whats entails but i know pulling the shafts out is a must on a solid rear.. the IRS on vettes is a little different and a spreader is needed to get the center section out of the carrier. maybe some other guys who do gear swaps on F-bodies will chime in and tell you whats entailed! good luck and sorry to hear you blew it!
