Bad Transmission

The trans in my 89 firbird formula does not shift from 1st to 2nd until 3000 rpm taking off really slow. It's fine 2nd to 3rd but does not go into 4th or overdrive and there is no more revearse. Is the tranny toast and need to be changed or is there a simple fix. I have this posted in another section, but thought I would try another section and see if I could get more people to respond. The trans is an auto with 121,000 miles.

Are you sure you dont just have 1 and 3 and no 2nd 4th or reverse That would indicate a stripped or broken sunshell particulary if it happened suddenly. In any case theres no quick fix I am afraid.

I went to the local auto parts store to ask about a rebuilt tranny for my car and they told me about a 2 week wait for a tbi 305. They said it would be a 1 week wait if it was a tpi 305 and only 2 days wait if it had a350 tpi. I then went down to the local dealer and they told me that GM does not have one anywhere in the United States for a 305 tbi. I thought all 305's and 350's used the same 700r4 tranny, but they told me that a 700r4 is not just a 700r4. The chevy dealer told me a 1989 305 tbi could have come with one of 3 versions for this motor depending on the time of year. I have the chance to get a free transmission from a friend of mine from the same model year, but from a tpi 305. I know it will bolt up, but will it work. I hate to spend the money on a new trans. when my goal is to put a 350 in the car someday.

It will work the dealer list multiple units because each aplication has different servos etc and different shift quality. But it will function in the car. I however would never replace a 700r4 with a 350 its not significantly stronger and you loose so much in the way of drivability.

I'm sorry I didn't mean a th350 tranny, I meant to say a 350 engine. My mistake. So my same question is will a 350 motor work with a 305 tbi transmission. I plan on gettting a tranny soon and maybe a motor in about 3 years. My goal is not to have a high horse power motor, just maybe an over the counter 250hp 350.
