Bad TPS leads to horrible shifting

Just a post informing people about something i knew but didnt think of..

the 4L60E requires a working TPS to shift properly. Took my car in to Aamco (had a free diagnostic coupon off the internet) and they read the computer and told me the EGR code (already knew that one) and the TPS code.

Picked up a new TPS on the way home, replaced it, soldered a wire taht was split/corroded slightly, and went out for a test drive.

Drove perfect after that. My problems included, late/no shifting, no overdrive, no luckup, and horribly soft shifting and erratic idle.

a 27 dollar TPS fixed all of this and saved me from having my transmission rebuilt for the 3rd time in 2 years.

like i said, i knew the transmission needed a TPS to know how hard/when ot shift, but i didnt think about. so before you go and think you need a rebuild, check out the TPS first...

Re: Bad TPS leads to horrible shifting

it will do so, especially in obdII cars where the transmission is completely comtrolled by the computer as far as shifting. since the computer only processes the information given to it by sensors, switches, and such, it relies on it's readings to make it shift properly. but even in the old OBDI's, it still did the same thing, whethere it be the TPS, a blown head gasket, or a very very rich condition realtive to when a fuel injector is dumping gas, etc. Any misfire in the motor will make it shift funny.
