bad rear end possibly installed??

I just bought a 99TA, and i know something's wrong with the rear end but not sure if i need to replace it all or what's up. The previous owner told me he had replaced the rear end a couple of months ago. When i'm driving, there's a sound coming from the rear end that literally sounds like an old washing machine on its spin cycle . There's also a slight banging noise when i'm braking, and both the ABS INOP and TCS OFF lights are on. my best guess is that this guy just put on any non TCS rear end to get the car going. I'm ready to buy a rear end this week, but i just want to be sure it's not something else i'm overlooking.

Also, if i do have to replace the rear end, i have two that i've narrowed it down to, which one would u all go with? for $700 there's a rear end with 3.42's and limited slip, or for $450 there's one with 3.42's but an open differential. I'm just looking to use the car as a fun daily driver, not for any real racing. will the LSD make that much difference over the open diffy?
