Auto tranny question
Auto tranny question
i just got my first auto ls1, i was wondring why are there 2 Ds for the shifter, 1 D has a box around it the other one does not. also can any body tell me what kinda diffrence does it make when the asr is turned on or off.
The "D" with the box around it is your overdrive. The other "D" is drive. Like a 3rd gear.
The ASR is to help you from spinning when you lose traction. I dont know what the difference would be with it on or off- cause I dont have one on my car. They claim that it robs HP when its on. Thats just what I read.

For racing the 1/4 mile, it doesn't matter whether the shifter is in Drive or Over-Drive, because the car won't shift out of 3rd (Drive) anyway.
QUESTION for you, do you know what gears the car has? If not, and so long as it's still factory original, check the codes on the driver's door for either GU2 for 2.73 gears, or GU5 for 3.23's
.
Also, DO NOT run with ASR "on" at the track............it doesn't exactly rob the engine of power, it simply cuts back the throttle position until the tires stop spinning, and well, at the track, you're likely to spin the tires just a little bit
..........but you want them to.

From everything I've read and heard, stall converters with 3.23 gears are a very nice combo
. Most guys with LS1's like 3200 - 3500 stalls. With that, you should also look at getting a tranny cooler, as a stall converter will cause the tranny to run a little hotter.

leave it in OD for daily driving...at the track ive always been told its better to race in D. you dont need 4th but there is supposedly a roller clutch or a band or some damn thing in the tranny that is engaged in OD and not in D and can cause some drag on the trans, hurting performance a bit....its not a huge difference but i leave mine in D for the 1/4 mile.
also the advantage to a high stall torque converter is a very powerful launch (assuming you have some good tires). the car will UP AND GO like its a different car altogether. it feels very different at first....the tranny seems to slip a lot (its not really slipping dont worry) when you aren't on the throttle hard....for example, when you get going from a stop the rpms climb before the car really gets moving, kind of like riding a clutch in a stick car....it sounds liek it would be irritating to somoene whos never driven a stalled auto but you get used to it quickly...and plus when you jump on it, that looseness goes away BIG TIME.
...i dropped my 60 foots 4 tenths and my ET 6 tenths with a high stall and a set of drag radials (NECESSARY once you have a converter, way too much torque multiplied to the rear wheels WAY too quickly to even think about hooking up on street tires.)
