Auto shifter sticking
Auto shifter sticking
I have a 95z and now that is has turned cold the shifter has a very hard time on the first time of the day. The botton will not push down. I have my foot on the break as hard as I can and I have to beat the botton down to get it out of park. It did this last winter and not during the summer so I thought it might have fixed its self, but no such luck. Any ideas guys?
thanks,
Matt

I got of my lazy butt and dug through my cheap-o Haynes manual for insight. There is a solenoid in the console that is connected to the shifter. It's part of the system designed to keep the car stuck in park if the break is not depressed. Books says to yank it and apply battery voltage to the leads to see if it "clicks." No Click = No Good. I'm going to test cold and warm this weekend and I'll post my findings
Well I fixed it, and it was the solenoid. I noticed (with the console torn apart) that the I could get the shifter out of park easily if I tapped the solenoid with the break pedal depressed. I guessed something was gummed up in the solenoid. I pulled it, applied a little bit fo 3-in-one oil and worked it in and out for a while. Lots of grime came out and I cleaned up the fouled oil with a rag. I reinstalled the solenoid and it works perfectly now
My guess is it was pop or gooey coffee (spilled on the console at some point in the past) that dripped into the solenoid.
