i didn't mean not working... I just meant it'd be the weak link on hard launches. It'd be "not quite as indestructible", but still much better than a 10 bolt.

I'm a forced induction kinda guy who is completely addicted. Going overkill suits me well.

Ahh ok. I just really want to make sure there will be no conflicts on this project that i'm over looking. At best i have 400rwhp but the weakest link will be my SLP LT4 clutch, so i think that would protect the rear quite a bit. I'm just wanting something that won't whine like my 8.8. The 9 inch seems like the cheapest, strongest and maybe least chance for whine if i use a stock 9 inch gear set of all the rears. Especially since i have access to 9 inch parts. i already have my home built ABS setup so i don't even see a reason to consider a $2k, 12 bolt.

Where did you get your gear/reluctor ring for the driveshaft? I've been trying to get a hold of one because my half-baked idea of using a gear that bolts to the yoke on the rear end didn't work out -- too many teeth. I already have a sensor and can fab up a bracket and do all the mounting pretty easy -- I just need to get a hold of a 29 tooth gear that'll press tightly on the driveshaft yoke.

I was thinking about just trying to pick up a nice used centersection like this. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW
Slap it in and hope the posi works if not then buy an aftermarket one and have it setup in there and reuse the stock gears. I'd think one could pieced together for about $1200. I'm sure it won't work out as well as i plan or hope.

I had one made by a friend at a machine shop. I just went and bought a 28 tooth gear with a #10 pitch which works out to a 3 inch gear. The gear was to wide and the bore was too small so i took it to my friend and he bored it and narrowed it to fit perfect. The gear cost me $40 to buy and the machine work was free for me. I'd think one could be duplicated for around a $100 at the most.

that looks like it would work fine. Since the wear pattern is good, all you really have to worry about is the condition of the posi. That's definitely a good way to keep the costs down for a budget 9".

If you wouldn't mind looking into it, I'd pay up to $100 for one. 29 tooth would be perfect, but I'm sure a 28 would work also. When ya find out, just drop me a PM.

I just noticed something... I bought a G80 Eaton mechanical locker for the chevy 14 bolt rear end in my truck from that same seller. I've definitely put that sucker through the ringer and it's still going strong. A big thumbs up for that seller.

I wanted a 27 tooth but the only ones i could find went in 2 teeth increments so only 26,28 or 30. Mine has been on for 1.5 yrs and has worked flawlessly for me. I'm just guessing on the cost. I know the gear cost $40 before machine work. I really have no idea how much a shop would charge for that work. I wouldn't think much though. I'll try to look into it this week.

You have a PM.

Thanks,

Replied...

Oh, and Z95m6: If you can get me the gear, the machine shop at my dad's work can do anything I need to it (cut it down, open the center hole, etc). Where can I get the a 30 tooth (110/3.70 = 29.72) gear from?

Re: Anyone ever build a budget 9 inch?

I got my 28 tooth from a local shop that carries sprockets and gears. Its made by Martin. If you do a search on yahoo under Martin sprockets you should find their site. I found it the other night on the web and they have online catalogs. I'm just confined to a ****ty computer so i can't really view their catalogs.

I'm doing this now, did you end up going through with it? Just checking for any tips on it.

I bought the Moiser housing and axles and built my own center section. I got the center section housing from a friend for $40. Bearing and shim kit from ebay for $75. Used 3.89 gear from ebay for $68. Forged 1350 yoke for $80. Tried the 31 spline track lock posi but it didnt last long before the new clutches threw up. Found a 31 spline locker and it works great! I like the noise as long as it works. I set the gear pattern in the center of the tooth and it works fine. I get a slight amount of decel whine but its not really noticeable. (you have to listen for it) In all, I like the diff!
