Advice for tranny install?
Advice for tranny install?
My transmission + converter are arriving Thursday....finally!
All I have left to do is drain the old lines/cooler and install my B&M 24,000GVW unit.
Also, someone told me to put grease on the front of the converter (facing the engine). Is this necessary and why?
Here's a little checklist off the top of my head...
-Fill converter w/1qt of trans fluid
-Install converter on transmission - turn until 3 clicks are felt, make 1 full revolution to ensure it is seated properly
-Raise tranny up, install cooling lines before fully raised
-Raise up all the way, bolt bellhousing to engine - make sure dipstick tube is bolted w/ the bellhousing
-Ensure proper clearance between flexplate + converter (1/8"?)
-Bolt converter to flexplate, reinstall all electrical connections and shift linkage
-Install torque arm bushing clamshell housing and bolt to transmission
-Install driveshaft
-Install X-pipe
-Fill transmission via dipstick tube until at proper level
That it? Any tips/advice/corrections?

Re: Advice for tranny install?
You've got a good list going. Be sure not to cross thread the cooling lines, they're a pain in the butt. You don't need to do anything with the breather line. The dipstick is very hard to read so keep track of how many quarts of fluid you add. If you add too much, it will puke out the breather hole.
Re: Advice for tranny install?
What are the details of the old tranny, did it blow or wear out? You may want to think about running a can of something like this through the system. Do it after you put in the new cooler to get any contaminants out of the system.
Other then that your list looks pretty good.
Oh, it might get a little messy if you move the tranny around alot during the install, but I filled up the pan through the dipstick hole before puting it in the car, less you have to add later plus when you put on your converter and make that extra spin you are not spinning it dry.

Re: Advice for tranny install?
I actually looked all over for that stuff (and found it today, LOL). Frank recommended carb cleaner, so I loaded up the lines with carb cleaner and blew it all out with compressed air, in both directions several times. The lines are totally clean now, and nothing but air comes out.
My old tranny was in pretty decent shape...it was beginning to hit the rev limiter on the 2-3 shift, but that's it.
Also, I put the aftermarket cooler in AFTER I drained the lines, but the cooler had caps on the inlet/outlet so I don't think it was dirty. Maybe I should flush it again real quick tomorrow before the trans goes in ya think?
