Adjustable Panhard Bar or Not?
I have a modded 96WS6 which has a proline lowering kit, relocation brackets and lakewood lower control arms. Getting a panhard bar should I get an adjustable one and what is the benifit?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Adjustable Panhard Bar or Not?
The only purpose served by an adjustable PHR is to center the car's body over the rear end. Cars are assembled with a certain amount of "production tolerances" in all the parts, and these tolerances may stack up, resulting in a rear axle that is not perfectly centered. It's usually not an issue, and with stock wheels/tires is not apparent. In my case, I installed an adjustable PHR to center the rear of my car, which had visibly less clearance on one side than the other after I installed 17x11's with 315/35 tires.

The strongest rear end that GM put in the 4th gens (well, it's the only one they put in the 4th gens!)The car is mainly street driven, and I've only used street tires at the track so far. I've bulletproofed things as I go along, and it's ended up being front to back on the car. The motor is strong (understressed at the moment) and could take some boost or nitrous in the future if I want. I just replaced the clutch with a Street Twin. At the moment, I'm installing a bunch of suspension upgrades (frame mounted TA, DS loop, SFC's, LCA's, RLB's).
I fully realize that the stock rear is the weak link in the car, and I don't expect it to last forever. But "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is my philosophy - so I won't swap out the rear until it breaks. At that point, I'll likely go with Strange's new F-body Dana 60 rear along with a strong driveshaft. The car has yet to run it's full potential at the track, due to various issues (grip, clutch, suspension). It's quite possible that, now that those issues have been / are being addressed, the little 10-bolt might grenade on my first pass.
GM really should have put the 8.5" 10-bolt in the cars - it's a much stronger unit that most guys would never need to upgrade. Plenty of GN owners are running 10s with their stock 8.5" 10-bolts. Unfortunately we got stuck with the puny 7.5" ticking time bomb.

Measure from the tire to the same spot on the outside of the fender on both sides of the car. If the measurements aren't equal, the rear end is not centered... adjust the PHR until the rear is center.
