A4 slips only when cold?

I did a search in the forum but wasn't able to come up with an answer to my question Sorry for the long post, I tried to explain it properly. This is a problem that I'm having with the Camaro.

It seems as though most guys have problems with their trans shifting fine when cold but slipping after it warms up. My issue is the exact opposite. Over the past couple of weeks we've avg'd 20 degree days, since we've had this cold spell I've noticed my transmission has problems with shifting initially. If I start the car and let it warm for 10 minutes or so the car runs no problem. If I start it up and let it run for a minute before I pull out it has serious lag shifting up to 2nd... especially from a dead stop. It runs up to 4K RPMs or so for several seconds before it finally upshifts. The problem goes away by the time I make my 4 mile drive home.

This morning it was 9 degree's outside, the car had sat the entire weekend at a friends place. I got in the car... started it and let it run for about a minute before I went to pull out *I was late for class * When I put it in Reverse I at first thought I was simply sliding on the patch of ice I was parked on... after several tries of pulling forwards then backing out I got it on the road. When I dropped it in to D and pressed the gas, the car almost seemed like it was in N. The car was revving to about 4500RPMs but barely moving. With in 10 seconds of giving it slight gas it finally started to catch and was driving just fine. By the time I got to the end of the road *about a mile* it was shifting just fine. I've checked the fluid the other day and it looks decent to me... its not black but its not a nice red color. I had the tranny serviced about 3 1/2 years ago*approx 65K miles since the flush*. I know you're supposed to swap out the fluid every 25K miles or so but I check the tranny fluid every time I change the oil and it always looked fine. I may have just screwed it up by not having it serviced more often but the car isn't really driven THAT hard very often. It seems as though this extreme cold is causing a lack of pressure? Maybe if I add more ATF it'll solve the problem but the level looked fine to me when I checked the other day... I'll double check it on my way out to work this afternoon.

It just sort of confusing how it seems to act just fine once it gets a little warmed up.

An older school of thought suggests that you either change the fluid religously like every 25,000 miles or dont change it at all. Especially dont change it, or begin to change it after it hasnt been changed. A lot of times the crap inside it, is what makes it grab. I had an 88 caprice police interceptor that never slipped once (trans) untill the shop decided to take it upon them selves to service the trans at 102,000 miles. Never was the same, And i gave them hell for it.
