A4 lugging engine on decel @ low speed?

If this is an elementary question, please forgive my ignorance. You folks have yet to steer me wrong so here goes anyway....

I noticed a few times recently (in the last week or so) when I apply the brakes at low speed (parking lot speeds) and come to a stop, the tranny apears hesitate before dis-engaging and downshifting into 1st. The speed is low enough that it never shifts above 2nd before the stop. It causes the engine to lug and nearly stall out (RPMs drop to about 300, the car shudders and the lights dim) before the A4 dis-engages and kicks down to 1st. Routine driving like coming up to a traffic light, it hasn't happened- it's only at very low speeds like in a parking lot.

I can't reliably re-create the symptoms (on command) right now, but it does seem to be centered on low speeds followed by a full stop. I'll play some more to try to re-create it consistantly.

Until then, anyone seen this before? Is this normal (i.e. characteristic of an A4 LS1) or indicative of an actual issue? Car is low mileage '02 SS (about 5100 miles) and is bone stock. It has a little time left on the factory warranty, which is the real reason I'm asking now to determine if this is an indicator of something developing, instead of paranoia due to a general lack of time driving my own friggin car. Figure now would be the time to address it.

Thanks,
Allen

I'd buy that, but how many miles on it when it showed symptoms?

I'd like to know WTF or if this is somthing that is normal for an A4 LS1. If the TQ is going after 5200 miles, sounds like a good excuse for a high-stall (3500) TQ in the near future!

Forgive my typing, a little shaddy after a super-bowl party! Just wondering since the warranty is running out soon.

Thanks!

Allen

PS- thanks to the admins for moving....

Nearly 50 views and no tranny experts to shed some light?

As I mentioned, I know little about the workings of the A4 so I'm at a loss as to what to do to try to isolate it further.

Thanks,

Allen

it really does sound as if the converter is going bad or the lock up is not disenguaging properly.
