A4 4.10 owners inside please.
I was wondering if you like the 4.10s in a Automatic? I was thinking on going to 4.10 any Pros and Cons you could tell me about I dont plan on taking long trips or care about gas mile. I have 2.73s in right now and everybody I know says go to 3.73 and that I wont like 4.10s. Thanks for your help.
I had 3.73's in my car last year. They were a bad set of Richmond's though, so I've got my 2.73's back right now.
Here's what I can tell you:
Hope some of that helps you out.
Here's what I can tell you:
- I'm considering 4.10's this year myself
. YES, they are pretty extreme, but with the automatic tranny, I don't think they'll be as prone to breaking as they would behind a standard trans. - I do a fair amount of highway driving (probably 40%~"ish" highway) but I noticed almost no loss in fuel mileage even with 3.73's last year
. - While I did like the pull and acceleration with 3.73's, I didn't like where the shift points were. My hopes are if I go with 4.10's, it will compensate for different shift points by at least being able to accelerate even quicker in each gear than with the 3.73's. The problem with the 3.73's was that the transmission would never downshift more than 1 gear from any point
. Right now with 2.73's, depending on speed, you can usually drop 2, or sometimes even 3 gears at a time!
- Traction (on street tires) sucked with 3.73's. If you want traction on streets, keep your 2.73's
. Anything in the 3.xx's and up will require DR's or E/T Streets to get traction, so the difference between 3.73 / 4.10 won't be that much. I ran the 1/4 mile with the 3.73's and got the exact same time as in my sig, and all because I couldn't afford a pair of slicks at the time. - 4.10's will put the engine higher in its power band in 3rd gear at the end of the 1/4 mile, and offer better acceleration through each gear even compared to 3.73's
.
Hope some of that helps you out.
I'll tell ya, I really like me 4.10's. Alot of guys around here say that 4.10's don't work well with an LT1, especially with an auto. However, these are the same guys who won't run me from a dead stop (because they know they'll get spanked!) As far as RPM, I'm just past 3,000 @ 80MPH.
How do you find the shift points? I mean, if you're cruising along at around ~60 mph and punch it, how far down will the tranny downshift, and does it pull good from there?
How about on the highway, how well will it accelerate even from ~80 mph?
...........reason I'm asking is that I got my a$$ handed to me by a Cobra last year (w/3.73's) because while doing about ~80 mph, he hit it and I hit it, and he just took off, whereas I know with my 2.73's, the car downshifts to 2nd upto ~80, and accelerates like crazy to over ~120 mph!
Maybe with 4.10's it would accelerate quicker?

I'm currently running the 4.10s in my A4 and think they are a good addition to an automatic LS1. Acceleration is greatly improved but like other people say the shift points are a little screwy. Gas mileage hurts, too, cuz I'm only getting a little more than 200 miles per tank. A heavy foot may also be a contributing factor. Beware for top end though, I think I maxed out at like 125 mph! I like taking off fast, though, so it all depends on your driving preference. The place I got it at said Richmond sucks so I got the GM ones and even after placing them under a lot of stress they're still holding up. Everythings got Pros and Cons, it all just depends on what you're looking for.
I have an Auburn Pro Center with Richmond 4.10's. They sing like a school girl, and the rear clutches clunk like grandma's replacement knee caps, but she moves like a bat out of hell...
I'm at 3,000rpms at 75mph on the interstate.
I went from 2.73's.
I took it up to about 132mph the other day, and was running 5500rpms in OD, so I'd say your max will be at about 140mph when you hit the rev limiter...
Gas mileage with these things sucks...
BTW, just for information purposes, so I since a couple posts about it. 3.73 and 4.10 gears will out accelerate the 2.73's regardless of speed. It all depends on how well you hit the powerband. The nice thing about 4.10s is that even if your tranny only does a single gear downshift, it'll still be dropping you in at about 4000rpms. I can make the car "buck" at 75mph in OD when the TC is locked up just by popping the gas pedal...
BTW, I got the Richmonds because they were already in the built rear when I bought it. I had heard bad things about them, mainly that they are loud, but I think they are working pretty well for me. They are pretty loud though, the whine I mean. The reason for the "loud" Richmonds is because of their high nickel content. This high nickel content also means they are stronger...

richmond gears are the stronger gears to buy they last longer and dont break as often however,, as a side effect they do whine but if your going to build your car for speed just you probabbly wont hear the gears after the aftermarket exhaust you through on it. I through richmond 4.10's in my auto ls1 with a loud mouth and barely hear the ring and pinion.as for performance 4.10's will give you the most advantage out of the gear swap for drag racing however you roll on any speed after like 25 mph will defenetly suck compared to 2.73 gears unless you down shift it yourself.you gonna need dr's too cause when i changed my gears to 4.10'from 2.73's i still had street tires and all icould do was just make smoke shows off acceleration and i would always get beat in racing.once i through my dr's on by nitto i started pullin high 12's all day long and the rear end is holdin llike a champ. my vote goes for the 4.10's
I have an A4 with LT's and Cai the usual stuff, I have 3.23's im thinkin to get 4.10's I rarely go on the highway for travel but when racing on the highway aganst my buds Gt wouldnt 4.10's help me out providing im not running past 130, wouldnt i get there so much quicker I know ill max out the rpm quicker? If not correct me but everyone says they like their 4.10s but not the gas milage.
the problem with 4.10's is when you go to wot after about 60 mph it will only drop one gear to third in an aoutomatic tranny. while when you had the 2.73 it fell all the way into 2nd giving you a much harder pull at a higher rpm. in my experience i have noticed that roll ons arent as good as 2.73 gears at just about any speed after about 20-30 mph the real advantage about having a 4.10 gear is the straight line performance (drag) cause when you wot through all the gears it pulls way harder than 2.73.youd jump like 4-5 car lenghts in front off just the 100ft acceleration point with the 4.10's but for roll-on speed 4.10's i think they kinda suck unless you got a manual cause then you can control your shiftpoints.but still i really love the 4.10 gears.
