95 trans am ,worn shift cable???? automatic

i have a problem with my shift cable. it slides in and out of the bracket, i dont think its supposed to. it seems like theres something supposed to hold it in place through the bracket ,does any one know what ? I know its hard plastic,i was thinkin maybe there were some kind of clips that were keeping it in place, but just broke off, it will shift into p.r.n.d , but wont go back all the way .

Does sound the like the shifter cable. It's not worn out, sounds like a few clips broke off. There is a clip built into it that holds it in place at the shifter and at the transmission. I had to replace mine in February, not a difficult job. Should take a half hour to an hour maybe. The most difficult part is getting the grommet to fully seat in the hole through the floor board. Fairly cheap as well, I bought a used one for about 20 bucks if I remember correctly.
