8.8" rear end

i was thinking about putting an 8.8 in rear end out of a mustang in my car with a spool. what would it cost to have the rear end fitted and welded up to work with my car? are the axle tubes too short or too long?

Re: 8.8" rear end

it would not be very cheap, i'd say $500 in housing modification and then $450 in axles. I would just build a 9 inch.

Re: 8.8" rear end

I'll have about 500 dollars in my whole 8.8 when I get it finished. The only thing I have left to purchase is the axles. I'm getting Mosier 31 spline units to go with the 31 spline t lock I got with the rear. That price also includes ls1 an ls1 era rear disk set up I scored at my local salvage yard for 80 bucks. The machine work to mount my 3rd gen axle tubes cost me 135 bucks. I am going to be running a custom torque arm modeled after a bolt on mustang unit I saw in a magazine.
I should have it all finished in the next month or so.
Hope this helps.

Moser lists 9 inch axles as costing $450 on their site. So if the 8.8 axles cost $400 that plus your machine work puts you over $500. Plus your other parts.

Re: 8.8" rear end

im getting the rear end for free, and the spool for really cheap(i dont know what this means)
the axles, widening/shortening of axle tubes, and attaching all the hardware are the only things i have to pay for.
i know a 9" is stronger, but for my application, an 8.8 would be ideal, in that it wouldn't rob as much power, and is plenty strong

not to mention, im getting a great deal on it. that extra couple hundred dollars for the 9" is more than im wanting to spend.

Re: 8.8" rear end

mosier sells replacement f body axles made from stronger material for under 300 a set. I believe unless I miss read the ad that they are available in all spline counts and widths. I'll check on that .

Re: 8.8" rear end

moser sells a 9" housing, already modified to fit the 4th gen.
Part# 7H9FBT GM "F" Body Housing WITH Torque Arm Brkt
ive seen it go for $550-600ish.
they can even narrow it to fit wider wheels/tires.

then you can pick up the internal parts from a salvage yard, buy some new axles, and have a badass 9" for under $1k.

if you break the internals, no big deal cause you got them cheap.

Exactly. Thats what i suggest you do. I plan on ditching my 8.8 in the summer for a cheap 9 inch setup.

Re: 8.8" rear end

Could you please be more specific about the parts involved? I'd love to see if I could really do a 9" with 3.73's for under a grand!!

Moser offers Axle, housing and TQ arm for $950 on their site. I've heard on LS1tech that you can get the setup cheaper through vendors. One guy said that he got those parts for $900 shipped from a vendor. After that all you need to do is go to a salvage yard and find a 31 spline centersection, with a posi, and gears you can live with and slap it in. The best thing about a Ford setup centersection, is no noise. You can also find used posi centersections with 31 splines on ebay for about 150-250. Thats 900 + 250 and you are good to go.
