79 Ta Rear End Strenght?

I just purchased a 79 trans am with a 403. I am replacing the 403 with a 496 stroker BBC. It should be in the nieghborhood of 500-600 hp the way its built. Im wondering if the stock rear end in this TA will be strong enough to handle the BBC. Im not even sure which rear it has, i know its a 10 bolt. If its not strong enough would it be worth it to build this rear end?

the 8.5 10 bolt is a pretty decent rearend. there are GNs running low 11's (that I know of) with that rearend. At your said power level some aftermarket axles with c clip eliminaters would be a very good idea if running slicks. a girdle support cover wouldnt be a bad choice either
