700R4 Tranny Swap in My 1979 Z28

Hey everybody. I'm new to this site but am looking forward to all the great help I'll be getting.

A few months back I sold my 2005 civic and made the decision to purchase a 1979 Z28 Camaro as my daily driver (kind of risky being in college but that's how I work). My friends and I have had a lot of fun fixing it up here and there and just learning a lot about cars.

Anyways, the tranny started pooping out on me about two months ago. I was planning on swapping in a 700R4 in the place of the stock TH-350. As I was making these plans my engine decided to cease up on me. We pulled it and I decided to part off the 305 and get myself a 350.

Back to the tranny, I was wondering if anyone on here has successfully swapped a 700R4 into a '79 Z28 before. If so, what are the exact steps that I would have to follow to make this happen? I know that I have to move the tranny crossmember and shorten the driveshaft, but what else is involved? If you could include links to the parts that you suggest that would be awesome.

I appreciate any and all feedback as every little bit helps. I plan on making this happen over the span of a weekend.

Drag racers for decades have always used the 350 for lightness, and power.I don't think changing trans is a good idea.Might look at some old chevy mags for this help. The 350 is a hot rodders dream trans.My02.

I know this thread is old and he said he wanted to accomplish the swap in a weekend but it thought I'd throw this out there anyway.

A 2004r requires the same tv cable and crossmember moving(though a different direction, but the holes should already be there for the th400). it can use the th350 drive shaft. The 2004r will require a few upgrades but the gear spacing is better than the 700r4.

I hope your swap went well.

Unfortunately "Z28CollegeDude" never returned to the site after his initial post.
