700R4 Self rebuild

There's a large company that offers a 90 minute video specific to rebuilding 700r4's (along with other tapes with other trannys), and has a large selection of parts and rebuild kits. Some 4wheel offroad magazine did a review on it, and said it was alright.

My question is has anyone FAILED rebuilding a tranny, specifically a 700r4? Are there any expensive special tools I would need? Any words of caution?

The setup is a stock LT1 in a 2700lb '88 RX7, going with a 3200ish stall, and 3.9's or 4.10's in the back (3.9 is the lowest available). Either mid-summer or fall a LE2 h/c will be going in with a bottom end rebuild, so I'm looking for something that will handle 400 to the wheels.

"My question is has anyone FAILED rebuilding a tranny, specifically a 700r4?" Are you kidding?! Very few people can build a 700R4 or 4L60E correctly. If you want the best chance, make sure you use the ATSG rebuilding books and the video tape from Technical Video. Have someone help you who is familiar with this unit if at all possible. If I can be of help, let me know?
