Re: 4th Gen A4 help

Not good for your car. My owners manual has a "NOTICE:" box and says don't drive in 2nd at speeds over 55 or you can damage your trans, and don't shift into 2nd unless going slower than 65 or you can damage your engine.

Put it in 3rd (D) and leave it there if racing from a light. Trust me on this one.

Re: 4th Gen A4 help

yeah the first time i raced my car i had it on third going about 65 and i got my *** handed to my by a tans am because it took off so much quicker than i did. for a fact my 2nd gear tops out at around 85ish and well to my knowledge you get more hp around the higher rpm range so i decided to do that.... and i kept up during the take off and started passing him around 130ish i think.

Any ideas on how to take off from 55-60 with the A4

Re: 4th Gen A4 help

I throw it down to second all of the time, and I have yet to have one tranny issue. I don't know about the jolting you are feeling, but when going into second at a higher speed it will feel like there is a drag all of the sudden on the car, that is normal in an auto or a stick.

Re: 4th Gen A4 help

From what I have heard, downshifting in an automatic without a manual valve body is not good. The reason for this is, when you are at higher RPMS, the transmission's pressure is increased. When you downshift, it takes time for the tranny to build up that pressure.

Someone on here will have to recommend a brand for the 4l60-e, as I am unfamiliar with who builds good ones for it, but a manual valve body will give you total control of your shifts in an auto. When you go from one gear to another, there will be no lag between the shifts; it will feel like a manual, and you are free to upshift or downshift at will. On the older non computer controlled transmissions, once you installed a manual valve body, you were stuck rowing the gears yourself, as the tranny won't do it for you anymore. I am not sure about this, but since the 4l60-e is has electronically controlled shift parameters, sticking it in overdrive will still make the car shift on its own, but you can throw it into lower gears yourself and have complete control of them. I have only heard this though, never actually seen it put to practice, so I could be wrong.

Also, one thing to consider, with my buddies manual valve body on his th350, he had the gear linkage made slight more difficult to engage for each gear, because with a manual valve body installed if you downshift accidently at high rpm, you can blow your motor, just like in a manual transmission vehicle.

Here, check these 4L60's out, I don't know much about them, but I think I'm going to get one now. They all have manual valve bodies. They also say that you can switch from auto to manual. Hope this helps.

The stock transmission in 94-02 A4 F-bodies is the 4L60E
