4L60E won't shift
4L60E won't shift
I transplanted a 96 LT1/4L60E into an 89 Toyota Landcruiser and can't get the transmission to shift. Had the GM Harness re-worked and the computer re-progammed by Fuel Injection Specialties in Texas. Using a 40 pulse VSS. Won't shift out of low. I was told I have a bad VSS. Installed another new one and still nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you in advance,
Tim

Re: 4L60E won't shift
disconnect the wire harness at the transmission and see if you get 3rd gear. both solenoids are off in third (fail safe). you might have a wiring problem. scanner would help, you can watch solenoid states (on/off).

Re: 4L60E won't shift
I think the trans. is fine. It worked in the 96 Camaro before the swap. Not sure how to check the VSS. I've been told that if you hook up a test light to it, when the wheels spin, the test light should flash....no flash. This is an aftermarket VSS kit that uses a 40 pulse reluctor ring off the back of the transfer case housing sold by Downey Off-road. The vehicle was towed about 10 miles with the rear wheels on the ground (my bad!!) and started a few times briefly with no trans fluid after the install (my bad again!!). I was told that these things aren't good, but shouldn't have damaged the trans.
Re: 4L60E won't shift
towing the car with the rear wheels on the ground causes the drive train to rotate without any lubrication!!! With fluid 15 minute tow @ 45mph + can burnup geartrain. W/O Fluid maybe 5 minat any speed. fill it and check for noise coming from rear of transmission, hope you are a very lucky person!!!!! the VSS should be a pulse generator and won't work with a test light. you need a DVOM with a hertz setting (fluke 87 or 88). no VSS no shift (except manually). hope this helps.

Re: 4L60E won't shift
I don't hear any noises coming from the trans when driving. It goes into reverse and drive just fine. Just does not shift (automatically or manually) when driving. Now with the rear wheels in the air, I do feel something happening when I manually shift it, but nothing when driving.
I do have a digital multi-meter. No sure if it has a hertz setting or not. It has DCV, ACV, DCA, hFE, a setting that has a cross on it's side with a side was triangle in the cross, and an Ohms setting. No sure what the hFE and the cross thing is. On the cross setting, I get a flucuating range of approx. 1970. Nothing on the hFE.
I have tried removing the harness plug to see if it's in 3rd gear or not yet. I will do it in a few minutes.
I'm almost at the point of taking it to a trans. shop, but I really don't want to.......$$$$$

Re: 4L60E won't shift
Unplugged the harness from the trans. and I have 3rd gear. I can manaully up and down shift into and out of, I think, one lower gear as well.
Know that I have a higher gear, I'm taking it to the exhaust shop so I can hear myself think. I'll tackle the trans. after that.
Anymore thought or ideas will be extremely appreciated!!!!

THATS VERY ODD HOW YOUR A 30 YEAR TRANS VETERAN AND WOULD LEAVE A POST LIKE THIS,
MAYBE THIS WOULD HOLD TRUE IF HIS CAR WAS FRONT WHEEL DRIVE BUT EVEN THE AAA SAFTEY BOOK SAYS THAT REAR WHEEL DRIVE CARS CAN BE TOWED WITH THE CAR OFF AND THE REAR WHEELS ON THE GROUND AT NO FASTER THAN 50MPH AND FOR NO FARTHER THEN 20MILES.
I BELIEVE THAT BECAUSE, I OWN MY OWN TOWING COMPANY AND HAVE TOWED HUNDREDS OF THESE CARS INCLUDING MY OWN CAR AND NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH MY TRANS.
I THINK HE HAS SOMETHING ELSE GOING ON IN THERE.
KEEP CHECKING YOUR WIRING AND SENSORS AND
GOOD LUCK!!
Re: 4L60E won't shift
Thank you white/blackss and tranzman , I just a really appreciate any and all advise.
The Tow Company that towed the Camaro to my shop had the front off the ground and the rear wheels on dollys. He said he would have raise it front the rear, but there was too much damage and the airdam would have rubbed. He said he uses the dolly for precautionary reasons.

AND THE TOW DOLLYS IS THE PROPER WAY TO TOW THESE CARS.
YOU CAN TOW SOME OF THEM DEPENDING ON EXHAUST AND SUSPENTION WITH A FLATBED BUT EVEN THEN ALOT OF THEM WILL SCRAPE WHEN YOU LOAD EM AND UNLOAD EM.
THE TOW COMPANY DID THE CORRECT THING BY USING THE DOLLYS.
Re: 4L60E won't shift
white/black, we got the point, you don't have to use all capital letters then try and make everyone seem like an idiot. You're just starting to become more of a problem then help i think. And don't reply saying something about what i posted. Just stop while you're ahead.
Re: 4L60E won't shift
I Agree with the tow guy! I used to work for a Centralized Rebuild Center servicing over 15 transmission shops and various general repair centers. If you PAY ATTENTION to my post it says 45MPH + it CAN BURN UP. It does not say it WILL!!!
Any way thank you for clarifing the use of dollys.
To get to the point if you disconnect the transmission main connector and you have 3rd gear and manual 2nd. you have a electrical problem. Either no speed sensor signal or both solenoids stuck on. where are you? i'm around St. Louis. be glad to help. the TCM uses TPS, MAP & VSS as its main inputs to tell it what to have the transmission do. so if you have first gear with the car hooked up. 2nd and 3rd with it unplugged. I know the trans is capable of all gears. The 2-4 band is on in 2nd & 4th. The 3-4 clutch is on in 3rd and 4th. If you have 2nd and 3rd. the main items that need to work, do. A transmission shop should be able to scan it. (if you have an ALDL or OBD II connector.) \Maybe the wire harness rework is faulty. We just had a harness made for a 84 chev truck with MPI out of a camaro and it kept giving a Knock sensor code. The harness had the knock sensor wire put into the # 8 hole instead of the #9. I moved 1 wire and fixed it. My point is you need to see what the TCM inputs are. Is it capable of signaling the solenoids to go on or off. Tranzman

Re: 4L60E won't shift
I noticed you mentioned scanning it with an ALDL port, i found a scanning tool you can use off of your laptop and it says you need to plug into the ALDL ports from COM 1 on the computer. What EXACTLY is the ALDL port? Is it the same thing you hook the OBD I readers into under the dash near the pedals? if it is, i have a cross between the OBD I and II, it won't read on an OBD I reader but doesn't have an OBD II port. So i thought this scan tool would help diagnose it for me. So what is up with the ALDL? and do you think i'd have to remove the ECU fuse?

quit while im ahead? for what?
as far as i can see this is a forum to discuss drivetrain repairs and such.
if i have something that i wanna say than im gonna say it, i really dont care what you think about what i posted, i wasn`t trying to bash anyone.
if you read the original post the trans was fine when it was in the camaro, actually when they pulled the trans it was working. so im sorry that someone else mentioned that towing might have been the culprit, when i was having all my problem assembling my car i needed all the advice i could get.
now, i might not know anything much about these trans. but i do know about towing and i wanted to voice my opinion to clear up that one possibilty before he went out and wasted his money for a new trans that still wont shift.
and as far as you telling me not to reply to you, i will reply to every thread that you are involved in if i want to and you wont do sh** about it
