Check the cable bracket on the transmission. It may have come loose.

Re: 4L60E......cable snapped?

Usually the cable housing breaks right in front of where the bracket bolts to the transmission pan underneath. But the snap-coupling may have broke or come out of the socket where the cable attaches to the manual shaft where it goes into the side of the transmission.
If it's the coupling, you may be able to re-attach it and fasten it with a nylon tie strap or something, but maybe not.
If the cable housing broke, you'll need a new cable assembly part # 1993-2002 auto trans shifter cable 12558306 $26.72
as found on Shoeboxes Tech Site and he also has the proceedure for adjusting the cable here

And if you don't want to spend the extra money, go to a junkyard and find a cable out of any auto from 82-02. They are all the same length and have the same ends and connections. Some have plastic ends and others metal, i think the plastic ends hold better and don't rust. I went to a junkyard and found one for $2. worked just fine. Just need to take apart the center console a bit and unbolt the two bolts holding it to the tranny pan. It's really self explanitory on how to get them out. and for an easy explanation of how to adjust it...

1) take shift cable end off transmission lever under car
2) Push tranny lever all the way forward
3) push shifter in car all the way forward to park (both will be in park now)
4) re-attach end to tranny lever under car.
5) done.

I did exactly this on my 83 with no jackstands or anything, the car was flat on the ground. It was a bit hard to reach under the car but was doable. When i was done i started the car up and took it for a drive and worked just fine. Hope this helped and wasn't a bunch of jibberish.

I know this is an old post, but anybody buying the 12558306 shift cable may also need the 12554126 lever. I have a 94 Z28 and had the 1st design lever which is a 6mm ball. Cable Part number 12558306 requires the lever with the 10mm ball (12554126) No Camaro this weekend Hope this helps someone else.
