4L60E bands slipping?
4L60E bands slipping?
My 95 TA 4A has been giving me some random screetching noises around red line. Are the bands slipping? It's all stock and a stock PCM as well. I've only got bolt ons so power isn't too much over stock. It only seems to do it 5,700 on up but not all the time and in all gears. Is it getting ready to be toast? It's got 72k on it and the fluids and filter were changed around 45k. Any suggestions on what to do?

There is only one band in your tranny and it is not holding anything unless your in 2nd or 4th gear.. So we can rule out you holding 5700+ RPM's in 4th, unless your haulin @ss, which means the only time the band in the tranny would be slipping is in 2nd gear.. Is that when you hear it?
Re: 4L60E bands slipping?
I replaced the serpentine belt last year hoping that was it. A Pontiac service manager told me that one. It wasn't it. Iv'e heard it from 1st to 2nd and also from 2nd to 3rd. I bought the TCI jumbo power servo kits but haven't put them in. I'm not sure if it'll cure the issue and if I'll have to drop the tranny to put them in. Not much room between the floor and the tranny!
Re: 4L60E bands slipping?
Oh so you are hearing it during the shift then???
Then I almost guarantee its the serpentine belt, even new they slip a little during shifts. Think about it you have a pulley spinning pretty fast and then ask it to slow down almost 2500 RPM's (or more depending on your gears) during the shift and you expect them to be quiet about it... Inertia is a Bit(h and things don't like to slow down that quickly, and the belt squeeks a little... I wouldn't think it was the tranny..
But to test if its the belt, go full throttle and let off as it shifts you should definitly hear the serpentine belt squeek then, and compair the noises...
I hope this helps...

Re: 4L60E bands slipping?
Yup, only during the shift. I'm feeling better on the tranny right about now. I'll see if it slips on the way home like that. If it is the belt, what brand belt grips best? I was debating on going with a March undersized crank pully so that'll need a shorter belt, right? Also, can't I bypass the A/C pully and go with an even shorter belt? Will that mess up my cooling though?
Re: 4L60E bands slipping?
Don't get underdrive pulleys, they screw with the voltage from the alternator and make it real hard to keep a charge. Don't know from experience, just what I've read.
Re: 4L60E bands slipping?
Well it didn't want to slip no matter what I did on the way home today. I've heard that you shouldn't use belt dressing on serpentine belts. Any thoughts on that? Is there manufacturer out there that makes a premium belt to prevent the slipping? If it's the belt of course. Does anyone have any experience adding jumbo servos? I bought the TCI 2nd and 4th servo kits.
