4L60 vs. 4L60E

I have a 93 Z28. At first I heard the 4L60 shares some parts with the 700R4. Then I heard it's just a renamed 700R4 nothing changed. Just wondering what's a stronger tranny and what can take more power? Reliability? I have 117k on mine and it's doing pretty well. My friend had his rebuilt twice already in his 96 Z28.

The difference is with the computer controlled shifts and whatnot on the 4L60e. The 4L60/700R4 is controlled by a TV cable that connects to the throttle body. Another difference is the VSS speedo signal. The pulse rate on 4L60e's is faster than on 4L60's. You can change the speedo to correct for rearend gear ratios via the computer on 4L60e's where you have to change the speedo gears in the tailshaft of the 4L60. I think they are both the same as far as strength and reliability go, it just seems like the 94+ 4L60e's are more prone to hitting the rev-limiter b/w up-shifts once the tranny gets worn.

(Sales pitch) If you need a trans, I've got a fresh built 4L60 out of my 93 Z28 for sale with a 3200 vigilante converter. The trans is built by a reputable builder in my area, several of my friends have 4L60e's built like mine by the same guy that run mid 10's in the 1/4 with no problems. It shifts hard, barks 3rd with the 3200, only ~6000 miles since it was built. Asking $1200nego. with the Precision Industries 3200 Vigilante stall. I swapped for a T56, now i need a 12bolt!

700r4 has 3 planet gears in the rear planetary set.
4L60/4L60e has 4 planet gears in the rear planetary set.
4L65 used in the z06 vette has 5.
There may be some other upgrades as well, but that's how I remember them,

All 700R4's & 4L60E's have 4 pinion planetaries in them, and the drivetrain in each is virtually identical. It just depends on which one you have to start with.
